Cranford’s Jenna Goeller, Kaitlin McGovern and Jessica McCoy had all fouled out.
With roughly 20 seconds to go the Cranford seniors, and the team’s three key starters, were all on the bench and nervous to say the least.
Gov. Livingston had the momentum, rallying since the start of the fourth to cut a 12-point deficit down to five with 14.1 seconds left. Then Erin Ferguson grabbed an offensive rebound and connected on a putback to get Gov. Livingston within three.
Cranford's upperclassmen then breathed a sigh of relief as they watched freshman forward Carly Maucione come through in the clutch.
After getting fouled while attempting to bring the ball up court against a suffocating full court press, Maucione made good on two free throws with 6.8 ticks left and sent Cranford to a 56-51 victory over Gov. Livingston for the NJSIAA/ShopRite North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 championship in Berkley Heights.
It was the first sectional title for Cranford since 2010, when Goeller, McGovern and McCoy were freshman.
"We have been playing together since we were 13, and we just don't want it to end yet," said McCoy, who finished with 12 points and six rebounds in helping Cranford reach the Group 3 semifinal where it will meet Jefferson tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Ramapo.
"It's do or die in states," McCoy said, "and we just wanted to show that we are the better team, that we are a different team than when we saw Gov. Livingston a week ago."
A week ago when Gov. Livingston knocked Cranford out of the Union County Tournament in the semifinal round. The Berkeley Heights school went on to take the UCT title over Oak Knoll on Sunday.
"I think they (Gov. Livingston) were very shocked at how much we were driving and how all five people scored consistently," said McGovern, who had a team-high 18 points. Maucione followed with 11 points, and Goeller had nine points on the day.
"We had to fix our chemistry that we lost somewhere in the middle of the season," McCoy said. "Now we are firing on all cylinders."
It took all five players on the Cranford hardwood to halt a possible Gov. Livingston comeback at the end of the fourth, and right before the break.
Down 21-13 at the start of the second, Gov. Livingston went on a 6-0 run to get within 21-19, thanks to two-point buckets by Mallory George, Sarah Dilly and Ferguson. Cranford then responded to close the period with a 7-2 surge. Mairead McKeary had a pair of free throws, McGovern connected for two, and McCoy hit a 3-pointer to cap scoring in the first half with Cranford leading, 28-21, at halftime.

Girls hoops: Monday's sectional final previews

NORTH JERSEY, SECTION 2
GROUP 3
Cranford (19-8) at Gov. Livingston (23-4), 7
Round 4:No secrets between these two. Cranford pinned two regular-season losses on Gov. Livingston but the Highlanders scored a major slice of revenge en route to the Union County Tournament title by posting a 36-27 triumph in the semifinals.
Matchup to monitor: Cranford defense vs. Gov. Livingston’s Mallory George and Erin Ferguson. In their last encounter, Gov. Livingston ran its motion offense quite sharp, getting a number of buckets on back-door cuts. Mallory George and Erin Ferguson worked their high-low magic efficiently and also prolonged possessions with their efforts on the offensive glass. Jessica McCoy and Kaitlin McGovern must lead a concerted effort by Cranford to move the duo away from the backboards.
Also, pay attention to the individual matchup between Alyssa Cranston of Gov. Livingston and Jenna Goeller of Cranford. The two senior guards are cut from the same cloth, ultra-competitive defenders who make each other work for what they want.
The difference will be…:Cranford has to keep Gov. Livingston to one-and-done possessions. Cranford senior guard Jessica McCoy has averaged 13.3 points in the three previous contests. If she can work her way inside, catch either of Gov. Livingston’s bigs prone defensively and draw some fouls, she is deadly at the line and could get the bonus of curtailing some of their playing time. Gov. Livingston would sign up in a heartbeat for the same crisp performance it put together in the UCT semi. The tough defense of Cranston out high pressured shooters and induced Cranford into a 1 for 14 showing behind the arc.

Cranford's Jenna Goeller was at the line with an opportunity to extend a one-point lead with 1:27 to go.
Neither Cranford nor Chatham had held anything more than a four-point lead all game and the gymnasium went silent as Goeller lined up her shot. The ball bounced off the back of the rim on the first attempt and Goeller's cry of frustration broke the silence.
The senior guard made sure that mistake did not happen again and connected on her following five free throws to help secure Cranford's 41-38 victory over Chatham in the semifinal round of the NJSIAA/ShopRite North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 tournament yesterday in Cranford.
"The one I missed I was really mad at myself, which is why I made sure to get the rest," said Goeller, who went 5-for-6 from the line over the final moments of regulation, hitting the last two free throws with 25.5 seconds showing to lift Cranford, 39-35.
Chatham's Grace Conroy then went to drive, was fouled while going up for a bucket and went to the line, where she was 1-of-2 to get the Morris County team within three. Cranford's Carly Maucione stretched the advantage to 41-36 with 19 ticks on the clock with a pair of free throws to give the team its biggest cushion of the game. Conroy closed the scoring with a basket, and Cranford prevailed to reach its third sectional final in the past four years.
"This is our senior season. It's sudden death in states, and that pumped us up," said Cranford's Jessisca McCoy, who had 10 points on the day. "It was a really tough game (against Chatham). We were off, not connecting from the outside, but we adjusted."
In the first half Chatham's pressure zone defense forced Cranford to attempt long range, lower percentage, shots. The team hit 31 percent from the field as Chatham took a 15-14 lead at halftime.
After the break Cranford improved its accuracy to almost 60 percent as it began making drives to the basket, finding the open lane off the pick and roll.
"It was just a game where none of us were on, but we all picked each other up," McCoy said.
McCoy recorded eight points and Maucione scored eight of her 11 points as Cranford outscored Chatham, 27-23, over the second half.
"I think everyone was frustrated on being forced outside and our shots just weren't falling," said Goeller, who had seven of her team-high 12 points in the final period. "In the fourth quarter, whenever I saw an open lane I just took it and hoped for the best. Either to get to the basket or to the line for two."
While Goeller's drives sparked Cranford offensive flow, Kaitlin McGovern keyed the defense with nine rebounds, five off of the defensive glass, and six blocks, three in the fourth quarter in helping to hold Chatham standout, Conroy, to 14 points.

When It Comes To Winning In States
STATE TOURNAMENT: Union County Girls’ Basketball
By JR Parachini

When it comes to winning state tournament games, no Union County team - other than Group 1 power New Providence - does it better than Cranford.
Thursday night’s 50-45 North 2, Group 3 quarterfinal win at third-seeded Iselin Kennedy was Cranford’s 14th state tournament triumph in the past five seasons and sixth on the road.
Cranford is 14-5 in state tournament games under sixth-year head coach Jackie Dyer, including an impressive 6-2 mark on the road. The only two road losses were season-ending setbacks at West Morris last year – in the semifinals – and two years ago – in the final.
“The girls are not ready for the season to end and I’m not ready for it to end,” Dyer said.
Cranford’s 8-1 home record in state tournament games under Dyer includes an eight-game winning streak. Cranford has lost only one state tournament game at home under Dyer, which was her first, a 45-31 decision to visiting Voorhees in the 2008 N2, G3 quarterfinals. That was the only season Cranford did not win a state tournament game under Dyer’s guidance, which was her first year at the helm of the Cougars.
Iselin Kennedy, the last girls’ team in the state to lose this season, finished 26-2. The Mustangs were 25-0 before falling - as the top seed - to seventh-seeded Piscataway 43-41 in last Friday night’s Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament championship game at the Rutgers Athletic Center in Piscataway.
Kennedy rebounded with a 76-39 first round N2, G3 home win Tuesday over 14 th-seeded Rahway.
The sixth-seeded Cougars, now 18-8 and on a two-game winning streak, will next be playing at home at Martin Gymnasium again, this time against seventh-seeded and defending champion Chatham Saturday at 4 p.m. in the semifinals. Cranford eliminated 11th-seeded Roxbury 42-32 at home Tuesday in its first-round encounter.
Chatham won at second-seeded West Morris 56-49 Thursday night in one of the other three quarterfinals. Chatham defeated West Morris at home in last year’s final.
West Morris won N2, G3 in 2011, defeating Cranford at home in the final.
Cranford won the section in 2010, downing Somerville at home in the championship game.
Saturday’s other semifinal features top-seeded Governor Livingston hosting fifth-seeded Mendham. In Thursday’s other two quarterfinals, GL ousted eighth-seeded Warren Hills 47-30 at home, while Mendham won at fourth-seeded Nutley 42-39.
The championship game is Monday night at the higher seed.
Junior guard Kerry Wischusen paced Cranford with 11 points vs. Iselin Kennedy, while senior Jessica McCoy had 10, junior Carly Maucione 10, senior Kaitlin McGovern nine and senior guard Jenna Goeller eight.
“We did a very good job defensively,” Dyer said. “Our guards really pressured their ball-handlers.” Cranford overcame McCoy going to the bench with her third foul early in the second quarter.
“Freshman Hanna Ross helped out defensively and Carly had eight rebounds,” Dyer said.
Brittany Washington paced all scorers with 19 points, while Kennedy teammate Taylor Freeman produced 14.
“We had good weak-side help vs. Brittany,” Dyer said.
Cranford led 20-9 after the first eight minutes.
“Kerry made three 3s in the first half,” Dyer said. “They started us in a triangle and 2 and Kerry’s shots were on.
“In the second half when they went to man, Kaitlin saw an opening and went to the basket.”
Chatham, sparked by 16 points and 11 rebounds from Grace Conroy, came back to beat host West Morris by winning the fourth quarter 22-11.
The Cougars are 18-10 one season after 2012 graduate and the program’s all-time leading scorer – Amanda Bernsten – left to play at Princeton.
Cranford, as the defending champion two years ago in the semifinals, went to Chatham and stunned the top-seeded Cougars 53-49 in double overtime.
“Without Amanda Bernsten Chatham is still a very good team,” Dyer said. “They run their offenses well, are very scrappy and fight to the very end.”
Although Cranford did not get back to the Union County Tournament championship game - the Cougars were defeated by a red-hot GL team 36-27 in the semifinals - the N2, G3 playoffs once again presented another challenge they very much looked forward to.
“We took some time to catch our breath for the state tournament,” Dyer said. “The seniors on our team three years ago as freshmen won a state championship (North 2, Group 3) and they would like to go out as state champions this year as well.”
Union County was 4-0 in state tournament play Thursday night. In addition to Cranford and GL victories, New Providence and Dayton advanced to the North 2, Group 1 semifinals.
New Providence, the second seed and sparked by senior 1,000 point career scorer Cassandra Squeri and freshman Sydney Morang, bounced seventh-seeded Belvidere 74-53 at home. Dayton, the fifth seed and led by junior Nikki Athan, won at fourth-seeded Dunellen 54-35.
In Saturday’s semifinals, Dayton is scheduled to play at top-seeded Secaucus at noon, while there is no time listed yet for New Providence hosting sixth-seeded Bloomfield Tech.
The championship game is Monday night at the higher seed.
Including its two state wins so far this week, New Providence - guided by head coach Cap Pazdera - has a 21-5 state tournament record going back to the 2008 season. New Providence won Central Jersey, Group 1 in 2008 with three wins and was then defeated in the Group 1 semifinals.
In 2009, the Pioneers were defeated in the North 2, Group 1 semifinals, going 1-1 in state tournament play that season.
New Providence went 6-1 in the states in 2010 and 2011, capturing North 2, Group 1 championships prior to Group 1 state crowns both seasons. The Pioneers lost in the Tournament of Champions quarterfinals both years to St. John Vianney.
Last year as the 11th seed, New Providence won three state tournament games to reach the N2, G1 final for the third straight year. The Pioneers lost at top-seeded Whippany Park 49-44 in the final.
The last year New Providence didn’t win a state tournament game was 2007 when it fell in the CJ, G2 quarterfinals.
