NORTH JERSEY, SECTION 2
GROUP 3
Cranford (19-8) at Gov. Livingston (23-4), 7
Round 4:No secrets between these two. Cranford pinned
two regular-season losses on Gov. Livingston but the Highlanders scored a
major slice of revenge en route to the Union County Tournament title by
posting a 36-27 triumph in the semifinals.
Matchup to monitor: Cranford defense vs. Gov. Livingston’s Mallory George and Erin Ferguson.
In their last encounter, Gov. Livingston ran its motion offense quite
sharp, getting a number of buckets on back-door cuts. Mallory George and
Erin Ferguson worked their high-low magic efficiently and also
prolonged possessions with their efforts on the offensive glass. Jessica
McCoy and Kaitlin McGovern must lead a concerted effort by Cranford to
move the duo away from the backboards.
Also, pay attention to the individual matchup between Alyssa Cranston
of Gov. Livingston and Jenna Goeller of Cranford. The two senior guards
are cut from the same cloth, ultra-competitive defenders who make each
other work for what they want.
The difference will be…:Cranford has to keep Gov.
Livingston to one-and-done possessions. Cranford senior guard Jessica
McCoy has averaged 13.3 points in the three previous contests. If she
can work her way inside, catch either of Gov. Livingston’s bigs prone
defensively and draw some fouls, she is deadly at the line and could get
the bonus of curtailing some of their playing time. Gov. Livingston
would sign up in a heartbeat for the same crisp performance it put
together in the UCT semi. The tough defense of Cranston out high
pressured shooters and induced Cranford into a 1 for 14 showing behind
the arc.
