Speaking of winning...

A huge congratulations goes out to our JV team for winning the County Championship on Sunday at Kean University by defeating Governor Livingston.  Very well done!

Ok..not a great pic...sorry!

Ok....that was painful

I don't like posting all those articles about losing a game.  Let's hope our Cougars get back on track today against Roxbury at 4pm and we run deep into the State Tournament...a rematch with GL in the sectional finals would be awesome!

Kerri Moran walked back into the Rahway High gymnasium, looked up at the halftime scoreboard - her team was trailing by seven - and hung her head.
Her coaches told her "Wake up."
“We weren’t making our shots,” said Moran, a senior point guard and Oak Knoll’s all-time leading scorer. “They told us to pick it up and talked about getting easy buckets in transition.”
Oak Knoll switched its defensive scheme to man and began converting on fast breaks. Moran also dished out six assists and scored four of her 10 points, Catherine Bonner hit for 11 of her team-high 13 points and Monica Fritz and Catherine Bonner each recorded eight points over the second half when eighth-seeded Oak Knoll came from behind for a 46-42 victory over fifth-seeded Linden in the Union County Tournament semifinals last night in Rahway.
"It definitely was a team effort and hustle in general," Fritz, who finished with 10 points, said. "It was all about heart in this game. Both teams really wanted it. They just got tired in the end and we kept pushing."
Oak Knoll saw its deficit reach nine points, 33-24, entering the fourth quarter, but dug its way out to advance to its first UCT final since 1998, when it made its only appearance in a county championship game. The Summit school has never taken the title, but it will get its chance when it meets third-seeded Gov. Livingston on Sunday at 6 p.m. at Kean University in Union.
Gov. Livingston, the defending champion, earned a return trip to the final with a 36-27 victory over rival Cranford, the second seed, in the first of the semifinal games at Rahway.
While Oak Knoll began to pick up tempo in the third quarter, Linden's Jada Lewis and Destiny Jenkins were still hard to contain, scoring five and three points, respectively, to extended the team's 22-15 halftime lead to nine behind an 11-9 third quarter. Lewis finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, while Kaejah Hall added seven points and seven rebounds.
In the fourth, Oak Knoll was pure hustle. It went on a 10-0 run at the start of the quarter to take its first lead of the game at 38-35 with 3:22 to go. In the run, Bonner and Fritz each had four points, Moran had an assist and a two-point bucket, McAloon had two assists and Julia Wanfried contributed a field goal. Linden tied the game at 42-42 on a free throw by Keajah Hall, but Oak Knoll closed the game with a 4-0 spurt.
While Oak Knoll rallied to victory, Gov. Livingston was quick to take a lead and never relinquished it against Cranford.
Gov. Livingston played suffocating defense, running a box-and-one with Sara Dilly blanketing Cranford standout Jessica McCoy. The senior point guard was held to just two points over the first half as Gov. Livingston moved to a 20-8 lead at the break.
Mallory George and Erin Ferguson dominated the paint for Gov. Livingston. George finished with 13 points and four rebounds, while Ferguson totaled 14 points and nine rebounds in the victory.
“We all came out with a lot of energy and confidence, we all knew we could do it, everyone stepped up and we all played to our strengths,” George said.
Gov. Livingston was quick to open up 20-8 tear by the break, with George scoring eight points, Ferguson added six and Alyssa Cranston four during that run. Gov. Livingston’s defense continued to key the team for the remainder of regulation.
George and Ferguson outplayed Cranford off the glass and denied any second chances. Offensively, Gov. Livingston was too quick, powerful and possessed too many offensive weapons for Cranford to contain.

3 Double-Digit Seeds Rise To Occasion In Staging UCT First Round Upset Wins

http://unionnewsdaily.com/sports/upsets-highlight-monday-nights-uct-girls-basketball-first-round-play-hillside-knocks-off-union?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

Hillside's impressive third-year head girls basketball coach Sjocquelyn Winstead has guided her Comets to a second straight Union County Conference-Valley Division championship this season and on Monday night directed her 11th-seeded team to a big 59-54 first-round upset over sixth-seeded Union at Roselle Catholic in the Union County Tournament. There are always surprises when you get to the first round of the girls’ basketball Union County Tournament.
Monday night was no exception.
Again, this will be another year when all top eight seeds do not advance to the quarterfinals, which will be Thursday night at Rahway and Roselle Catholic.
Right off the dribble, the first two of the four 6 p.m. games from Monday night that were reported saw the lower-seeded teams triumph.
Scotch Plains, the 10th seed, topped seventh-seeded and neighborhood arch rival Westfield 46-44 at Rahway, while 13th-seeded Plainfield downed fourth-seeded New Providence 57-51 in one of the two Johnson gyms.
Scotch Plains, which improved to 10-12, previously lost at home to Westfield 54-50 in overtime on Feb. 1 in a Union County Conference-crossover contest. Westfield, which had a seven-game winning streak snapped at Union 49-47 last Thursday in a conference-crossover clash, fell to 14-9.
Plainfield, which improved to 5-19, lost at home to New Providence 51-38 in a conference-crossover contest just last Thursday. The Cardinals entered the UCT with a 3-18 record and then fell to 3-19 with the loss to New Providence. Plainfield then defeated Roselle in a preliminary round game.
New Providence, which won the UCC’s Mountain Division title with a perfect 14-0 mark, had a county-leading nine-game winning streak snapped.
It had to be the first time in UCT history that a 19-loss team defeated a 19-win team in a first round game.
The above games were a case of Watchung Division teams - Scotch Plains and Plainfield - defeating Mountain Division squads - Westfield and New Providence.
A third game that saw a lower-seeded team win was repeat Valley Division champion and 11th-seeded Hillside downing sixth-seeded Watchung Division foe Union 59-54 at Roselle Catholic. On the same night last year, Hillside - as the 15th seed - almost knocked off second-seeded and eventual finalist Cranford in the first round at RC before falling by the close score of 61-55.
Hillside doesn't get any credit and nobody takes the Comets seriously because they play in the "weak" Valley Division.
Hillside deserves some respect now and will give defending champion Governor Livingston all it can handle in Thursday night's quarterfinals at RC.

HERE'S A LOOK AT MONDAY'S
FIRST ROUND UCT SCOREBOARD:

AT RAHWAY
Scotch Plains 46, Westfield 44
Cranford 47, Union Catholic 38

AT ROSELLE CATHOLIC
Hillside 59, Union 54
Gov. Livingston 60, Johnson 33

AT JOHNSON'S TWO GYMS
Oak Knoll 45, Dayton 36
Plainfield 57, New Providence 41
Roselle Catholic 61, Elizabeth 22
Linden 55, Summit 37

Oak Knoll, the eighth seed defeated ninth-seeded Dayton for a third time in three tries Monday night, downing the Bulldogs 45-26 at Rahway. Dayton reached the semifinals the last two years.
Oak Knoll will need to knock off top-seeded Roselle Catholic to reach Monday night's semifinals. The top seed has won the tournament the last three years, including GL last year and Roselle Catholic in 2010 and 2011.
The last top seed not to win was Scotch Plains in 2009 when it was defeated by Roselle Catholic in a semifinal at RC.
Oak Knoll previously swept Dayton in Mountain Division play, winnning 45-34 at home in the season-opener for both on Dec. 14 and then 39-27 in Springfield on Jan. 17.
Oak Knoll second-year head coach John Bertollo said it was his team's defense again that was at the forefront.
"It was a five-point game at the half and then we played much better defense (man-to-man) in the second half," Bertollo said.
Oak Knoll outscored Dayton 22-8 in the second half, including 11-2 in the third quarter when Dayton's only two points were on free throws.
Standout Cornell-bound senior Kerri Moran paced the Royals with 17 points.
"In the second half we were on cruise control," Bertollo said.
It was Oak Knoll's fifth straight win as the Royals - who finished second in the Mountain Division - improved to 19-3.
The team's fourth straight victory was an impressive 39-28 conference-crossover triumph over visiting Cranford last Thursday. Oak Knoll held Cranford to its second-lowest offensive production of the season.
"Again, our defense took over," Bertollo said. "We had to focus on Jess McCoy and Jenna Goeller, who usually makes a lot of 3s, only made one and I think finished with only three points."
Oak Knoll did not face Roselle Catholic this year or last year, so this will be Bertollo's first challenge against the favored Lions, who also improved to 19-3 Monday with its 61-22 first round win over Elizabeth in one of the gyms at Johnson.
"On paper RC is the favorite, but as you saw Monday night, not all the favorites won," Bertollo said. "This is a county where anybody can beat anybody and that has been proven many times.
"We'll play our game and see where that takes us."

JR's Thoughts on Union County Seeding

I normally like to post a direct link to the article instead of recopying it. However, Sideline Chatter posts their articles in a way that makes next week's article replace this weeks article. Which means that, for all intents and purposes, the article disappears once a new one is written. So I've copied the full article below so we won't lose it. As UCT Girls Prepare To Seed Field

...UNION COUNTY GIRLS’ BASKETBALL For the week of Feb. 4

By JR Parachini
for sidelinechatter.com

Wow!

What a Union County Tournament seeding meeting it should be on Wednesday!

Here we go:

First Cranford swept Governor Livingston in Watchung Division play and then Roselle Catholic swept Cranford.

Then GL swept Roselle Catholic.

Meanwhile, Union ended up splitting Watchung Division games with GL and Cranford, while Linden swept Union in Watchung play.

Mountain Division champion New Providence has the most wins of any county team with 17 and has not been swept by an opponent.

Repeat Valley Division winner Hillside - which also has not been swept by anyone - begins the week with the county’s longest winning streak at nine and has the least amount of losses to county foes – which is zero.

All but one – 22 of the 23 teams situated in the Union County Conference – are scheduled to play Tuesday. Union Catholic is the only team that is off.

38TH ANNUAL FRANK J. CICARELL GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

UNION COUNTY TOURNAMENT INFORMATION:

The seeding meeting is Wednesday at Roselle Catholic at 10:30 a.m., the same time as the Union County boys’ seeding meeting.

The coaches on the girls’ seeding committee – the first of a two-year stint – include Linden’s Paul Gorski and Union’s Justin Meyer from the Union County Conference’s Watchung Division, Dayton’s Dave Rennie and Westfield’s Joe Marino from the Mountain Division and Hillside’s Sjocquelyn Winstead and Rahway’s Danielle Brown from the Valley Division.

The preliminary round is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 9 and the first round is slated for Monday, Feb. 11.

The quarterfinals are scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 14 at – tentatively -Roselle Catholic and Rahway.

The semifinals are scheduled for Monday, Feb. 18 at a site to be announced.

The final is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 24, at Kean University’s Harwood Arena in Union. The last two finals have taken place at Kean.

Sites should be confirmed at the seeding meeting.

SO WHO SHOULD THE TOP UCT SEED BE?

Which team should be seeded first?

The top seed won the tournament the last three years, including Roselle Catholic in 2010 and 2011 and GL in 2012.

The last top seed not to win the tournament was Scotch Plains in 2009, with the Raiders falling to fourth-seeded and eventual champion Roselle Catholic in the semifinals.

Roselle Catholic and New Providence have only two losses to county opponents, with Roselle Catholic owning a 60-53 home win over New Providence.

Who should be the second seed, the third seed and the fourth seed?

Should New Providence - with losses only to GL and RC - be seeded ahead of Cranford based on its overall record?

Some have argued that Mountain Division squad Oak Knoll deserves to be seeded ahead of Watchung teams Union and Linden because of its better overall record. However, Oak Knoll does not own a win over GL and Cranford the way Union does, nor does it have a win over Linden, which has two over Union.

“I would have put us at 5 or 6 before we lost to Westfield,” second-year Oak Knoll head coach John Bertollo said Sunday. “We had beaten them already.”

Oak Knoll defeated Westfield at home before losing at Westfield this past week in Mountain Division play.

“Now I would put us at, maybe around, the 7th seed,” Bertollo said. “If we win Monday and Tuesday we’ll have 17 wins and I think 17 wins should get us a decent spot.”

How does Hillside get figured in all of this? A team that ended up finishing 20-6 last year including a perfect 14-0 in the Valley Division, as the 15th seed the Comets came oh so close to upsetting eventual finalist Cranford, giving the second-seeded Cougars all they could handle before falling 61-55 at Roselle Catholic in a first round clash.

Here’s a look at the records of teams - going into competition this week - with the least amount of county losses and who they lost to in the county:

Hillside (12-3): 0 county losses.

Roselle Catholic (15-3): 2 county losses; both to GL

New Providence (17-2): 2 county losses; 1 to GL, 1 to RC

Oak Knoll (15-3): 3 county losses; 2 to New Providence, 1 to Westfield

Gov. Livingston (15-4): 4 county losses: 2 to Cranford, 1 to Union,

1 to Scotch Plains

Cranford (13-6): 4 county losses: 2 to RC, 1 to Linden, 1 to Union

RED HOT:

Hillside has won nine straight.

New Providence has won seven in a row.

Westfield has won six consecutive games and GL five.

IN WATCHUNG DIVISION PLAY:

Cranford swept GL.

Then Roselle Catholic swept Cranford.

Then GL swept Roselle Catholic.

And . . .

Union split with GL and Cranford.

And . . .

Linden swept Union.

If Cranford, Roselle Catholic and GL - the top three squads in the Union County Conference’s Watchung Division – are considered the top three teams in the county, then they equally proved it by knocking each other off on the court.

In the meantime, New Providence keeps on winning and has been swept by nobody.

The up-and-coming team that had three huge wins this past week, including the first two over foes it previously lost to? That team would be the Westfield Blue Devils.

Westfield head coach Joe Marino, who guided the Blue Devils to their only Union County Tournament championship in 2008, would love nothing better than to draw the least amount of attention and sneak up on his next opponent.

Westfield improved to 12-7 overall and 10-4 in the UCC’s Mountain Division after beating Oak Knoll 60-52 at home Tuesday and then Dayton 50-49 at home Thursday. Westfield lost at Oak Knoll 63-50 Jan. 10 in Summit and then the next day in Springfield was defeated by Dayton 46-42.

Westfield avenged both of those losses to extend a season-high winning streak to five going into Friday’s conference-crossover game at Scotch Plains.

The arch rivals are used to playing each other at least twice during the regular season – home and away – because they are normally in the same division. Westfield dropped down to the Mountain Division this year, while Scotch Plains remained in the Watchung.

Westfield has wins over Watchung teams Union and Linden, falling at home to Union 47-44 Dec. 22 and winning at Linden 54-52 on Jan. 15 in a conference crossover contest. Westfield was also defeated by Linden 52-38 in a Len Sepanek holiday game Dec. 29 at Ridge.

Westfield won its sixth straight to improve to 13-7 overall when it downed Scotch Plains 54-50 in overtime Friday in Scotch Plains. The Blue Devils won overtime 5-1 after the Raiders, who fell to 8-10, won the fourth quarter 19-13.

Union scored a big win Thursday, defeating Cranford 43-39 at home to earn a split with the Cougars in Watchung play. Cranford defeated Union 49-38 at home on Jan. 10.

With Thursday’s win, Union improved to 12-7 overall and 7-6 in the Watchung Division, while Cranford slipped to 13-5 overall and 9-4 in the Watchung.

Union split with GL and Cranford and was swept by Roselle Catholic, although the Farmers led RC by five points early in the fourth quarter at home before falling by one point, 35-34.

Roselle Catholic, which was off Thursday, is 15-3 overall and 10-2 in the Watchung Division. If Roselle Catholic wins at Plainfield in division play Tuesday, the Lions will clinch the Watchung crown and repeat as champions.

New Providence already won the Mountain Division title, while Hillside repeated as Valley Division champions.

JR's TOP 16 UCT SEEDS AS OF FEB. 4:

1-Roselle Catholic (15-3)

2-Gov. Livingston (15-4) - swept by Cranford, but better overall record than Cranford and playing much better now

losses to Cranford by one and two points

GL has won five straight

3-Cranford (13-6)

4-New Providence (17-2) - I would have no problem with New Providence 3 and Cranford 4 based on how the teams are playing at the moment

New Providence has won seven straight

5-Union (13-7) - split with GL and Cranford, almost split with RC

6-Linden (12-8) - swept Union, split with Cranford - I would have no problem with Linden 5 and Union 6

7-Westfield (13-7) - has a win over a Watchung team (Linden)

and has won six straight, plus split with Oak Knoll

Westfield has won six straight

8-Oak Knoll (15-3) - beat Scotch Plains – I would have no problem with

Oak Knoll 7 and Westfield 8

9-Scotch Plains (8-10) - beat GL by 15

10-Dayton (12-7)

11-Hillside (12-3)

12-Summit (5-12)

OAK KNOLL STANDOUT SENIOR MORAN CLOSING IN ON

BECOMING HER SCHOOL’S ALL-TIME LEADING SCORER

Oak Knoll standout senior Kerri Moran, who will continue playing in college in the Ivy League at Cornell, is 29 points away from becoming her school’s all-time leading scorer.

The present leader is Katie Cummings, who finished with 1,357 career points in 2003. Cummings is now second-year head coach John Bertollo’s assistant coach at the Summit school.

Moran, averaging 16 points this season, is presently at 1,329 career points.

Oak Knoll is scheduled to play conference-crossover games at Brearley Monday at 5:30 p.m. and at in-town rival Kent Place Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Oak Knoll’s next scheduled home game is a crossover contest Thursday at 4 p.m. against Cranford, which is Senior Day.

Bertollo said that Moran will most likely set the record Tuesday at Kent Place and then would be honored at home Thursday on Senior Day for doing so.

Moran, a resident of Bernardsville, and Cummings are two of only six Oak Knoll players that have scored 1,000 points. The others are 1980 graduate Helen McMenamin, 1996 grad Kate Veronneau, 2005 graduate Courtney Hubschmann and 2011 grad Catie Mota.
